Just in case people are not aware of this situation I thought I would share.

The ‘original’ line of the Ridel’s who came to England along side William the Conqueror and then moved into Scotland, early on became genetically Y-DNA Bassett.

The way this occurred was that the male line of inheritance went female. The last biological male heir was a Richard Ridel who was underage when he became the next in the line of inheritance. He died before having children and the inheritance line fell to his sister, Matilda Ridel, thus she became heiress.

Matilda Ridel married Richard Bassett. They had multiple sons, one of the sons, Galfridus, took the Ridel surname (his mother’s surname) and in doing so inherited the Ridel lands/estate. Whereas another son, Ralph, kept their father’s surname of Bassett and in doing so he inherited the Bassett lands/estate. Due to Galfridus changing his surname, Y-DNA wise he and his male descendants are Bassett’s, though they carry the Ridel surname. I have not studied this line beyond this period so am not sure if it ever goes female again and thus the Y-DNA changes again.

Additional note: the Ridel surname over time morphed spelling into Riddell.
