Over the last week or two I have finally managed to sit down and pull together all the DNA results I have studied and the genealogical research (undertaken by many different researchers over time and a small amount by me) into one 'story' to layout what has been discovered within the DNA results combined with the genealogical research.

Up until this week I was still unsure of the exact position of where/how 3 of the 4 Barkley surnamed BigY testers fitted with all the other BigY testers with the surnames - Berkley, Bartlett and Berkeley. Prior to this week it was proven and supported by the both the DNA results and genealogy that the 15 Berkley, Bartlett, and Berkeley testers where all descended from one male - William Berkley Sr (d.1761/1762, Virginia, USA). Also prior to this week 1 of the Barkley BigY testers had to have been descended from William Sr and more so from William Jr due to all his DNA results matching perfectly with the other testers and especially the Berkeley tester who is a descendant of William Jr.

While I was pulling all the DNA results analysis and the genealogy research together I had another go at trying to find genealogical proof for the family connections for the Barkley men to the others. Read the full story about what has been found about the family proven to use the surnames - Berkley, Bartlett, Berkeley and Barkley.

Ann, this is Pat Berkley, a member of the Scottish English Marches project on Family Tree DNA. I have traced my Berkley ancestors to 1690, in Virginia, USA, but have been unable to get to Great Britain for any other ancestors. I feel that the Berkley men are connected to Scotland because of all the Scottish DNA matches I have, particularly the Rutherfords. Any help you can provide connecting my Berkley family to the Rutherfords would be appreciated.

I have been given family info that goes from this man skips some years and lands on Rutherford (Rutherfurd) a name that continued in my maternal grandmother’s family through to her mother.
